How You Can Have Memorable Entertainment For Your Next Important Event Without Stress

It’s Truly Easy Once You Know How...

Perhaps you just got back from a company meeting and you just found out that you are handling entertainment for your next function.

In the meeting, everyone treats hiring entertainment like that old television commercial by Life Cereal.  “I’m not going to try it, You try it...let’s get Mikey!”  Everyone in the room looks over in your direction and you are immediately given a new title, Entertainment Coordinator!

This thought starts ringing through your panicked head, “What am I going to do?”

The good news is, you have the secret right here to make your life easier!

Your first thought may be to go directly through the phone book.  You open the book to the Entertainers section and all you find is clowns, children’s magic shows, strippers, etc.  Nothing strikes your fancy to make you look good for your upcoming event!

You then decide to go to the trusty internet and you become overwhelmed because you are dealing with the whole world.  Let me tell you, just because an entertainer has a great website doesn’t mean they have a great show.

I was booking entertainment for an entertainment agency many years ago and found that many entertainers on the internet with great websites had never done a show.  They were advertising something they didn’t even have.  Don’t get me wrong, there are a lot of wonderful entertainers out on the net, but you have to be careful.

Whether it be a company party or any type of occasion for that matter, you CAN and WILL hire entertainment!  Persistence is the key and knowing what to ask them; or their representative, is what will help you determine to have that person at your important event.

Determine what kind of show you need, know this before you even start to look around.  Are you looking for a stage show; walk around entertainer; audience participation performance?  Look at your venue, close your eyes and get a realistic vision of what you would like to see go on during your event.  This will help you to narrow down your search for entertainment!

Let’s say you find an entertainer that has a great website; or a great advertisement in the phone book in you local area.  You decide to give them the call…

When you first talk to the entertainer, listen to their voice.  Are they enthusiastic, professional, are they happy to speak to you, are they prompt to return your call?  This will help to determine whether or not you want them representing you and/or organization.

Now that you have them on the phone, what do you ask?

  • Where have they worked in the past?

They should be able to provide you with letters of recommendation or at least a sheet of past clients.  You don’t want to hire someone who just started doing what they are offering with a couple of days experience.

  • What kind of show do you offer?

Another great tip is to know in advance what kind of show you need i.e. family show, corporate show, or whomever you are responsible for entertaining.  Know your audience!

Also, see if they interview you about your event, this is a great sign that they care and take great pride about their performance.

  • How long is your show?

You will already know what kind of show you want because you have a vision of what you need and want.

Tip: Try to run the show before any awards; gift exchanges; etc.  There is nothing harder than seeing people leave while the entertainer is performing.  It’s like watching money go down the drain for the person paying the entertainer.  If your awards ceremony is after the performance, people will stay.  They have to stay to look good for the boss!

  • Do you have a video or DVD?

This is another place to be careful.  Just because an entertainer has an amazing DVD doesn’t mean they are great entertainers.  DVD’s are edited for content!  Listen to the background laughter and audience response; watch how the entertainer connects with the audience.

What I look for in a DVD is many different shows throughout from many different venues.  This proves to me that they can work many different situations and are willing to adapt.

Also, make sure that the audience response isn’t computer generated.  Trust me; you’ll be able tell!

  • What is your fee?

This is another place to be careful.  Just because an entertainer is way below your budget, doesn’t mean he or she is a great entertainer.  You most often get what you pay for!

I have found that entertainers who charge more, have been in the business much longer and really care that your event will be a success.  They will interview you to tailor their performance to fit within your timeline and venue.

They often have the best glowing letters of recommendation and are willing to do anything to make you look GREAT!

  • How long does the set up of the performance take?

See if they will setup before everyone shows up.  There is nothing tackier than watching an entertainer setup while everyone is eating.  It is distracting and ruins the illusion of the show.

Tip: It is best not to have anything going on during dinner or dessert.  This is where people like to socialize with one another.  It’s really hard for an entertainer to connect with an audience with their mouths full of food.

  • Do you have sound equipment?

See if they provide sound equipment for there show if applicable.  Using the house overhead sound system at a hotel is doom for the stage entertainer!  It is good for your awards; or gift exchanges, but it is horrible for entertainers.  I have seen many truly amazing entertainers bomb with the house system.

Now all you have to do is wait the promotional package to arrive.  It is best to have many different calls out for different entertainers for comparing with which one will fit within your event, making your vision a reality!

Call the one that is best suited for your event, reserve the date and you will be on your way to becoming the entertainment booking superstar you truly are!

I wish you all the best in your quest for having the most successful event ever!
